The Promise of Nostos

The sea is not bent on circularity: it says Here is an island,
anchor here.
But because love waits, the broken hull
is soon patched, a torn sail sewn to hold the wind,
and then once again they set course. The uncalled for jubilance
at departure, feigned tears, the make-believe dream
where so-and-so appeared to say fly away home.
They do not leave for home. They do not leave to return,
despite their promises. They leave to leave, and if I love them
it's because they come hungry as a dream, and like a dream
their stay distills a life, or what a life could be—

Firefox tabs I've had open for saving but haven't saved til now:

Europe tops US in stock market value as of 2 April 2007

Mengin's Sappho care of some French lesbian site, to be recreated at Arts & Industry whenever I have access to a better lens...

"But...", an Easter sermon by David's favorite Episcopal pastor, Rev. Anne Howard. Watcher of language! I love her.

If the Holy One had brought me out of Egypt and all I got were this lousy t-shirt, דיינו (Dayenu!)

I cried. Yes I did. You didn't tell me Lee Scoresby dies. I don't know if I want to keep reading just yet. (Hester sounds a lot like Ann Richards in my reading head.)
